Degenerative and Bulging Discs – Causes, Symptoms & Treatment Options

Are Degenerated or Bulging Discs Causing Your Back Pain?

Are you struggling with deep, chronic low back pain that flares with sitting, bending, or long car rides? Do you feel like your back “goes out” a few times a year and leaves you unable to move for days? If so, the cause may be degenerated or bulging spinal discs.

What Are Degenerative and Bulging Discs?

Between each vertebra of your spine lie spinal discs—rubbery cushions that act as shock absorbers and allow movement. Each disc has a tough outer ring and a soft, gel-like center. Over time, due to aging, repetitive stress, poor posture, or injuries, these spinal discs can wear down
and weaken. This process is called degenerative disc disease. When the outer wall of the disc weakens, it can bulge outward—this is known as a bulging disc.

Why Do Degenerated Discs Hurt So Much?

  • Leaking disc material causes inflammation
When a disc degenerates or tears, it can leak irritating proteins into the spine — a condition often called Leaky Disc Syndrome. This creates painful inflammation around
    the disc.
  • Damaged discs become hypersensitive
Tiny pain-sensitive nerve fibers grow into the cracks of the disc, making it highly reactive to pressure from sitting, bending, lifting, or twisting.
  • Protective muscle spasms increase pain
When a disc is injured, the surrounding back muscles tighten to guard the spine. This protective response leads to painful muscle spasms and stiffness.
  • Bulging and leaky discs can irritate nearby nerves
As the disc bulges or leaks, it can irritate spinal nerves or ligaments, triggering sharp back pain, sciatica, or referred pain into the hips and legs.

As discs continue to wear down, they also lose height and hydration, increasing pressure on the bony vertebrae and facet joints. This creates a cycle of spinal degeneration and chronic back
pain.

Common Symptoms of bulging and degenerative discs:

  • Chronic low back pain
  • Pain worse with sitting, bending, lifting, or long drives
  • Pain relief when standing or lying down
  • Stiffness and reduced flexibility
  • Sciatica — pain, numbness, or tingling into the buttock or leg
  • Episodes where your “back goes out” for days at a time
  • Pain flare-ups after simple movements like bending to tie a shoe

Diagnosis of Degenerative and Bulging Discs

Diagnosing disc-related back pain starts with a thorough history and physical exam. A spine specialist looks for the classic disc pain patterns in the history as well as a painful response to specific movement tests. An MRI of the lumbar spine is the main imaging test used to confirm disc degeneration, annular tears and disc bulges or herniation.

While MRI shows disc damage, the diagnosis is made by matching symptoms, exam findings, and imaging together.

Treatment for Degenerative and Bulging Discs

There are effective non-surgical treatments for painful degenerative and bulging discs (available in Estero, southwest FL). The goal is not just temporary relief, but to improve the health of the discs and spine, reduce inflammation, and restore function.

At Integrative Rehab Medicine, we use regenerative medicine and targeted spinal rehabilitation to treat chronic back pain by treating the disc and the structures that support the whole spine. Treatment options may include:

  • Discseel® Procedure – seals disc tears and stops disc leakage using fibrin to promote disc healing
  • Platelet-Rich Plasma (PRP) injections – uses your own growth factors to reduce inflammation and stimulate tissue healing
  • Bone Marrow Cell Therapy – provides a high concentration of healing cells to regenerate damaged spinal structures
  • Ozone Injections – reduces inflammation and helps the body shrink disc bulges and herniation

Frequently Asked Questions

Degenerating discs can leak inflammatory proteins that irritate the nearby nerves, causing pain in the lower back.

As discs lose height and hydration, they place extra pressure on the surrounding facet joints and ligaments, which can also lead to stiffness and chronic pain.

Yes. When a disc is damaged or inflamed, it can release irritating substances that inflame the nearby spinal nerves, resulting in leg pain, numbness, weakness, or sciatica.

Bulging or collapsed discs may also directly compress nerve roots, worsening these symptoms.

Degenerative discs rarely heal completely on their own, but surgery is not always necessary.

Regenerative treatments such as Discseel® and platelet-rich plasma (PRP) injections can stimulate healing inside the disc and improve its structure, helping to reduce pain and prevent further degeneration.

Degenerative discs can worsen if left untreated, but progression can often be slowed or reversed with proper care.

Regenerative treatments like Discseel® help restore disc integrity, while physical therapy and targeted strengthening protect the spine and reduce stress on the discs—often avoiding the need for surgery.

Movements that place excessive pressure on the discs—especially bending forward (flexion), twisting, or lifting while bent—can accelerate degeneration.

Prolonged sitting also increases disc pressure and reduces nutrient flow into the disc, making it more vulnerable to wear and tear.

Maintaining spinal strength and mobility is the best prevention.

Walking daily improves circulation to the spine, while strengthening the core and back muscles helps stabilize and protect the discs.

Regenerative procedures such as Discseel® and PRP injections can improve disc health, slow degeneration, and reduce future flare-ups.

No. Degenerative discs are worn, cracked, or dehydrated discs that have lost height and flexibility over time.

A herniated disc occurs when part of the inner gel-like core (nucleus pulposus) pushes out through a tear in the outer layer (annulus fibrosus).

While both can cause pain, they represent different stages and types of disc injury

Yes. Several lifestyle factors can accelerate disc wear, including:

  • Being overweight, which increases pressure on the discs
  • Poor posture or prolonged sitting
  • Smoking, which reduces blood flow and oxygen to spinal tissues

Improving posture, staying active, and avoiding tobacco can help maintain disc health and slow degeneration.

I heard about discseel through researching my aches and pains on google, and was happy to see that a veteran friendly doctors office with a veteran representative is there to guide us through getting set up, and then getting to have a consultation as well over the phone…. I’m out of state , so it really helped in getting set up, and talk about the procedure and any concerns. The team at integrative rehab listens to your concerns, and also felt very taken care of, and on top of it they take care of their veterans which was definitely felt! If you are having back issues, and are a veteran I wouldn’t hesitate to have Dr. Sebastian and their team look things over to see if they can get you feeling good again! Kevin
After dealing with neck and back issues stemming from 21 years as a Naval Helicopter Aircrewman and trying multiple treatments and interventions, the Discseel procedure has been the most favorable treatment I've experienced. I was referred to Dr. Sebastian through the VA Community Care Program, and I am grateful that I was connected with him and his team. Dr. Sebastian, at Integrative Rehab Medicine, has been outstanding throughout the entire process. He is professional, knowledgeable, and takes the time to thoroughly explain every aspect of the procedure, recovery, and expected outcomes. He has always addressed my questions and concerns with patience and honesty, which gave me confidence in my treatment decisions. I also want to recognize Suzanne, Floyd, Michelle, and Kristine. From my first interaction with the office through follow-up care, they have been welcoming, professional, and genuinely caring. They made me feel like family rather than just another patient. Their positive attitude, responsiveness, and attention to detail made every visit a pleasant experience. The procedure has provided meaningful improvement in my symptoms and quality of life. While I still have some lingering issues that I continue to work through, I am grateful for the progress I've made and for the exceptional care I received from Dr. Sebastian and his entire team. I highly recommend Dr. Sebastian and his staff at Integrative Rehab Medicine to anyone seeking treatment options for neck or back conditions.

I had a 3 year old major herniation in my L4-L5 and medium herniation in my L5-S1 discs. I tried everything - physio, chiro, decompression, but it seemed like everyone just wanted me to keep coming back and I constantly kept getting reinjured and honestly a bit fatigued. I was finally contemplating surgery because I was not able to carry out daily life. I finally found Dr. Sebastian on youtube and reached out. He was great in the initial virtual consult. Then I flew in from Canada and went for an ozone injection in both discs. That helped. A few months later I went in for discseel with exosomes, and I feel like a new person. Each time they also included the PRP along the facet joints which I am sure will have their own benefits. I stayed on top of my rehab and workouts, especially walking everyday. I am still not back to 100% but being back to 80% is still amazing considering I was having a hard time even walking, sitting, standing, or picking up my kids. Now I am back at the gym and slowly rebuilding my pre-injury strength. There are small flare ups but they go away in a day or two, and I am learning to avoid certain workouts and movements. Dr. Sebastian and his team including Michelle, Kristine, Amanda, Floyd, and a few others I didn't get the names of, have been fantastic to work with. They answered all my questions to my satisfaction, and provided the best advice I received. I also found their team had practical knowledge around back mechanics and provided me with resources the doctors I saw before were not even aware of. This was money well spent, and I would recommend it to anyone with annular tears and herniations.

I fractured a vertebrae in my neck while in the Army back in 1990 and after working as an Ironworker by trade, my neck and back were both shot. I’ve done all the things: physical therapy, chiropractic adjustments, massage, injections and even had back surgery. After finding Dr. Klisiewicz, and having the Discseel procedure done on both my neck (4.7.26) and my back (5.13.26) I couldn’t be more pleased. The experience has been nothing short of PERFECT! Veterans have priority scheduling and they even have a veteran advocate/representative (Jason K) right there in their office to help facilitate the VA process. This made the process of getting VA approval quick and almost too easy. This procedure could be life changing for so many veterans who are suffering in pain. I encourage you to not wait and reach out today!

Without hesitation, I can say that Integrative Rehab Medicine provides the finest VA-covered medical care I have received in the last nine years. I would like to express my deepest gratitude to Dr. Sebastian Klisiewicz, his exceptional medical team, and Jason "JK" Kinnard, Chief Veteran Officer and Veteran Care Navigator, for their unwavering dedication to veterans and their families. Because of wounds and injuries sustained during my service in Iraq, I have suffered from multiple herniated discs in my spine as well as numerous joint-related conditions. Over the years, I underwent several surgeries, yet I continued to live with chronic pain that significantly affected my quality of life, sleep, mobility, and daily activities. From my very first interaction with Integrative Rehab Medicine, I knew I was in the hands of professionals who genuinely care about veterans. Dr. Klisiewicz took the time to thoroughly evaluate my conditions, explain treatment options, and develop a comprehensive plan focused on long-term improvement rather than temporary relief. After only two procedures—and while still in the recovery process before additional recommended treatments—I can already feel a remarkable difference. My pain levels have decreased significantly, my mobility is improving, and for the first time in years I am sleeping better and experiencing real hope for continued recovery. What truly sets this organization apart is not only their medical expertise but also their commitment to guiding veterans through the VA process. I had a lower back procedure performed with Interactive Rehab Medicine through the VA. The procedure "Discseel was a success but the VA side trying to get approved was a bumpy road and it's not the VA per say but the wrong people are in the process for approval and that needs to be fixed. I am healing well and the Staff from Interactive Rehab Medicine were very professional and I would recommend this procedure to any veteran with lower back issues in every aspect of outpatient and quick recovery. I still have 1 more month to go to completely heal so we will see. This procedure has made a difference in my life. Thank you Jason Kinnard, Dr. Sebastian Klisiewicz and all the Interactive Rehab Staff for a great job. Keep up the good work and I will be spreading the word. Are there any T-Shirts?

I have found Dr. Klisiewicz to be a thoughtful, attentive, accurate, and highly skilled diagnostician/clinician. He performed a spinal disc procedure for me ("Discseel") which resulted in a remarkable degree of improvement in longstanding low back pain with minimal invasiveness, no complications, and a quick recovery. I completely trust his judgement, advice, and procedural capability. My experiences with he and his staff have been reliably positive. I recommend him highly and without reservation.
